Bedtime Reads No. 1

Books have a way of making me excited in the oddest way possible. I love the smell of new books. I love turning a fresh page, eager to delve into what happens next. I love becoming the character, picturing myself in a whole new world (*breaks out into song* I can show you the world / Shining, shimmering, splendid.) There is nothing more relaxing than ending a long day with a few pages from a great book, so here is my new series, Bedtime Reads!

Buyology by Martin Lindstrom | Martin Lindstrom's book, Brandwashed, was the sole factor in sparking my interest in marketing. I became so fascinated with branding, case studies, and everything of the sort that I knew from that point on I wanted to pursue a career in business, specifically marketing (and not law as I originally planned.) I became inclined to seek out his other books, so when Secret Santa time came to ask for a present, I had my eyes set on Buyology. So far, I am a few chapters in and definitely not disappointed. Bloggers tend to be ones who love to buy, so I would recommend this informative, yet engaging book, to any shopaholics out there.

Mrs. Kennedy and Me by Clint Hill and Lisa McCubbin | The life of secret service men have always interested me, so when it came time to pick out a nonfiction book to read in my language and composition class last year, I set my eyes on this one. I am currently re-reading this book as I loved it so much the first time. Mrs. Kennedy and Me details the Kennedy era of the presidency but provides a first person narration from Clint Hill, Jackie Kennedy's Secret Service agent, in which he reminisces on his endearing memories with the First Lady. I cried at the end of the book the first time I read it, and the tears will most likely flow out again the second time around.

Humans of New York by Brandon Stanton | I mentioned this book in my January favorites, and my oh my does it deserve the recognition. I am a long time follower of the HONY Facebook page, as I'm sure many of you are, but this book captures some of his favorite portraits and quotes in stunning detail. I call it the picture book for adults as each page touches on something so simple in appearance, yet so profound in meaning.

What books are you reading at the moment?

  1. I feel like you're more grown up than I am when it comes to books! I still embrace my fantasy/sci-fi books, those are my favorites and I think everything else is quite... boring, haha. I've tried reading some nonfiction here and there but sadly I haven't finished most of them. The only piece of nonfiction I really enjoyed was The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch, the author has a couple of months to live after he finds out he's been diagnosed with a hard-to-cure cancer and it's basically him seeing life in a whole new light, learning to appreciate things, etc. I'm terrrrible at describing books haha, but it was one I really enjoyed reading.

Currently I'm still rereading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - with work, classes, and blogging I feel like there isn't enough time!

  2. Ooh, Buyology sounds like a very interesting read! I'm studying Business (majoring in PR) and Media and Communication, starting this year so I think it'd definitely be a worthwhile read for me!

  7. My "to read" list is piling up but I don't mind getting to know more books! Thanks for these. I agree with you about HONY! I've been a follower of Brandon and his photography for a long time now. Have you read that post about Vidal and how they were able to raise 1 million dollars for a school? It's quite impressive and really inspirational. I'd love to get my hands on his book.

  8. Buyology sounds interesting! If I had to do a degree all over again, it would probably have to be marketing, probably because I've been so immersed in the blogosphere and studying people's spending habits now! (It's funny because I previously wanted to do law too...OH NOW INTERESTS CHANGE *-*)

  12. This is so like me! Sadly, I hardly attempt to read nonfiction -_-. And I frequent the YA section of the library way more than the adult section haha. The Last Lecture was really touching though and HONY looks interesting!

  13. Oh no, no way! I have my hugeeeee share of teen fiction (anything from teen romance to dystopian). I only enjoy reading non-fiction when they are on topics I'm actually interested in :p I am definitely going to to give The Last Lecture a look!

I completely feel the same way as there is never enough time to sit down and read! Ugh, Harry Potter is just the best thing ever to read/reread, and I'm listening to the Goblet of Fire on audiobook right now every time I take my Sunday night bath :)

  14. Try a nonfiction book on a topic you're interested in, beauty, fashion, food (food is where my heart is at.) I constantly browse the YA section as well when it comes to dystopian and teen romance so no shame there LOL Definitely give HONY a go as it's so interesting to read about all these people's lives, quite inspirational as well! (And there are not many words, so no worries there.)

  15. Yes, it's been so interesting to read so far, and I would definitely recommend it! Brandwashed by Martin Lindstrom is another book I would recommend as well. Oh wow, that's so cool that you'll be majoring in PR and Media & Comm! Please tell me about how you're liking your studies as I don't know what to expect when I start college in September, haha. So happy to find another blogger the same age as me who is studying something similar :)

  16. Yes, definitely check Buyology out! Perfect for someone in managerial studies :) It's always nice to know the psych behind how we buy :)

  17. Yes, please do, and tell me if you read any of them!

  18. I feel the exact same way! I have started a list of books I want to read on my phone, and it currently has eight books on it. Buyology is definitely a good one to read as it's interesting to know the psychology behind how we buy :) Glad you enjoyed my pun....sometimes I'm afraid no one will find it funny, haha!

  19. Yes, it's so funny how interests change! I swear I was on this five streak thing...five and half years of ballet...five years of violin and then I would change and move on to something else, haha. I think blogging has been a great introduction to marketing as I see so many bloggers are in a PR job. Great to learn from them!

  20. Isn't the HONY book lovely! I read a few pages before bed as it sends me off to sleep in a very positive mood :) If you ever read any of the other books, I would love to hear what you think!

  21. Love these! If you're into fashion, you should check out The Sartorialist book. The Sartorialist was originally (and still is) a street style blog, but then Scott Shuman (the photographer) made a book. It's kind of similar to HONY, but with fashion. There isn't as much text, but it's the same idea of capturing bits of beauty in everyday people that would otherwise be overlooked.

  22. I just checked it out, and the book looks gorgeous! Definitely something I would love to pick up one day :)
