Recipe | The 95 Calorie Chai 'Latte'

Hello, my name is Emily, and I'm a chai addict. I have always connected the smell of chai with teachers, and for the longest time, I refused to drink it (not that I don't love my teachers). Recently, however, I have completely done a 360, and I am now obsessed with chai. Unless it's Christmas time and Starbuck's holiday drinks are in, I will always order a chai latte, iced of course. However, it has come to my attention that my wallet doesn't feel so good when I keep forking over money at Starbucks, so I went on a mission to make my own chai 'latte' (latte used lightly as this is pretty much tea, milk, and agave). Healthified. A bit.

You will need | a tea bag with your favorite blend of chai, 1 tbsp to 1 tsp of agave nectar (depending on how sweet you like it), 1/2 to 2/3 a cup of almond milk (depending on how creamy you like it), and a dash of ground cinnamon

Step One | Boil your water and fill the cup up one third to half of the way. I prefer filling my cup up one third of the way with water so the rest can be almond milk for a creamier taste. Follow the instructions for your tea on how long to steep. Remove the tea bag after steeping.

Step Two | Fill the rest of the cup with milk, and microwave for 45 seconds to a minute depending on how hot you like your latte. Add in the agave nectar, and stir well.

Step Three | Sprinkle a dash of ground cinnamon. Voila.

What's your favorite warm drink?

  3. I am in love with chai, masala chai from india is the best type I have had yet but if you want a cheep version of the iced kind, make so plain chai tea with no milk and freeze it as ice cubes before adding it to almond milk. As the cubes melt you will get iced chai.

  4. Looks delicious! I'm so into tea and just hot drinks in general in the cold months. Plus you can never go wrong with Trader Joe's! I'll have to pick some up next time I'm there so I can try out this recipe!(: xo

  5. Embarrassingly, I have no idea what a chai latte is. Is it a type of coffee drink? If so, I won't be drinking this since I hate coffee. I do drink it though, but it has to be really sweet. It's more for the caffeine...

  6. Also, I've only been to starbucks like 3 times before :p

  7. It is delicious! It's not the sweetest or the creamiess drink around (but yet again, this is my healthy attempt at a chai latte.) Trader Joe's is my favorite grocery store! I can go on and on about everything I love their from their teas to their light string cheese...If you do try it out and post a picture on Instagram, make sure to tag me, so I can see the wonderful goodness! :)

  8. Chai is actually a blend of tea! It is nothing like coffee as it doesn't have that bitter taste, but it's yummy with some almond milk and agave nectar as it adds a bit of sweetness and creaminess :) I often drink this for a bit of caffeine boost as well when I have homework or studying to do (the school struggle is real :|) Wow, only three times?! Honestly, I commend you for that because over here in the US, there's a Starbucks on every corner, so it's quite tempting. I know lots of people who are Starbucks addicts and spend a fortune there!

  9. I'll have to try out the drink. I've been using the powder and that is much more than just 95 calories.

  10. Oh my, the powder really is! I remember buying it once, and I never put in the full amount because I felt guilty how many calories and how much refined sugar went into it :| This recipe is not as creamy or as sweet as a normal chai latte, but it's a much healthier alternative to satisfy that craving :)

  11. I don't really like tea either :p I know, what a weird asian lol. Maybe I'll try it out? Since apparently it's not bitter. The way I think of Starbucks is that I could be using my money for longer lasting things (like makeup :p ).

  12. I actually didn't like tea or coffee for the longest time, but I slowly changed. It can be an acquired taste-haha That's great that you're not a tea or coffee addict though as too much caffeine is not good for you (well too much of anything is not good for that matter!)

  13. I LOVE chai tea lattes. They're practically the only thing I order at Starbucks since I don't drink coffee. Despite my obsession, I've never thought to make one myself. I'll definitely have to give this a go. Have you tried an English breakfast tea latte? They're just as good as well :)

  14. Chai lattes are the best right?! This one's not as sweet or as creamy as the one at Starbucks, but it's a healthier (and cheaper) alternative! Ooh I will definitely give the English breakfast tea latte a go next time :)

  16. Hi Emily, thanks for following my blog :) I haven't had a Chai latte in ages, I used to have them all the time when I worked nearby a Starbucks! My favourite warm drink would be a green tea or hot chocolate if I want something sweet!

  20. This is perfect for our super cold weather! Honestly, I only had chai latte from Starbucks. Will try this recipe! Thanks!

    A whole lot of serendipity

  21. I've actually never had a chai latte before... sticking with the tea forever lol. I might try it once though, this looks easy enough so even I could possibly do it ^_^"

  22. It's delicious! I would definitely recommend trying one at a coffee shop first (Starbucks has a great one), and then making it at home if you like it :)

  23. Oh my, Australia must make it iced chais a thing! Trader Joe's is my favorite grocery store, and yes, they have the most amazing assortment of seasonal fall food. Their cookie butter is to die for!

  24. Yumm hot cocoa is always a good choice :)

  25. I am so happy to find another chai enthusiast! I'm okay when the ginger is blended in with the other spices, but I have to say I'm not a fan of it by itself. My mom loves to put it in her cooking for that extra flavor, but man, it must have been an incident of biting on a piece of ginger that really turned me off :p

  26. Tweet me a picture if you decide to try it out! If one tablespoon of agave nectar is not sweet enough for you, try adding a bit more because I prefer mine on the slightly sweet side. Chai lattes have an amazing warm, cozy blend to them, and I can't get enough. Hope you'll enjoy it as well!

  27. Yes, I love drinking my chai latte on a cold day! Starbucks has a great chai latte, but theirs is quite a bit sweeter than my recipe so feel free to add more agave nectar to suit your taste :)

  28. This recipe is super easy, but straight tea will always be the healthiest! Wish I had the taste buds to drink tea like that :)

  29. I used to think chai...was for Indian people ._.
BUT nowadays, chai and other black teas make up most of the teas I drink, mostly because it's the ~holiday~ season and it tastes amazing with a dash of soy milk. (Stash's 'Holiday Chai' is my current fave and I've got three boxes of it for backup YOLO)

Anyways, I'll definitely try adding a pinch of cinnamon to tonight's cup!

    ReplyDelete
  30. That just cracked me up! Hahah! Ooh I will try to look for Stash's Holiday Chai as I can always use some more chai :) Cinnamon is great with chai...soooo good!

  31. Chai's the best, and it definitely was delicious!

  32. I've actually made this exact recipe before! Chai is my favorite warm drink, and when my husband and I were on a low carb diet this was my go-to drink :)

  33. It's great isn't it?! I am often tempted to snack on something, but this is a great alternative :)

  34. I love chai! It's the only tea I'll drink with milk...definitely a winner in my book :)
